Artificial intelligence in Manchester: a guide for local businesses

Manchester has one of the biggest AI communities outside London. Here's how a local business can use it, from free support to meetups to choosing who to work with.

The short answer. Greater Manchester has more than 660 businesses developing or using AI, and the largest AI workforce of any UK region outside London. For a small or mid-sized business, the useful parts are free advice from the GM Business Growth Hub, funded training and adoption programmes run by the universities and the Chamber of Commerce, and a handful of regular meetups where you can hear what's worked for other local firms. Start with free support to learn the basics, then bring in a specialist when you have a specific process you want to change.

How big is AI in Manchester?

Bigger than most people expect. A study for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, published in October 2026 and carried out by Perspective Economics, counted 663 businesses developing or using AI across the city region. It put the wider AI workforce at almost 11,000 people, the largest of any UK region outside London.

Most of those firms are home-grown: 54% started in Greater Manchester. The study found the region's strength is applied AI, putting the technology to work on real problems in specific industries and public services, with health and life sciences standing out. In its central scenario, the sector grows to about 1,420 firms and £1.6bn a year in economic output by 2035.

It's a fitting place for it. The world's first stored-program computer, the Manchester Baby, ran its first program at the University of Manchester in 1948, and Alan Turing worked at the university from 1948 until his death in 1954.

Free and funded AI support for Greater Manchester businesses

Schemes open and close, so check what's live before you plan around one. At the time of writing, these are the main routes in.

GM Business Growth Hub

The Growth Hub is Greater Manchester's publicly funded business support organisation, part of The Growth Company. Its support is free to businesses trading in Greater Manchester. It has advisers with specialist knowledge of AI, runs practical AI workshops in the city centre and online, and publishes a regular roundup of funding competitions, including national AI grants from Innovate UK. If you've never used AI in the business, it's a sensible first stop.

GROW AI

Announced in June 2026, GROW AI is a £12.8 million programme funded through UK Research and Innovation. It's run by Manchester Metropolitan University's Centre for Enterprise and the University of Manchester's Turing Innovation Catalyst, and it's aimed at helping SMEs adopt AI and turning research into commercial products.

Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce

Through a partnership with training provider IN4 Group, the Chamber runs free half-day AI workshops across the region and funded AI and data training for staff at SME members.

Made Smarter

If you're a manufacturer, Made Smarter is a long-running programme that helps manufacturing SMEs adopt digital technology, including AI.

AI meetups and events in Manchester

Meetups are the cheapest way to find out what's working for businesses like yours. These run regularly:

  • Manchester AI Meetup, run by Mindstone and UKAI. A free monthly evening event with practical talks on using AI at work. Usually listed on Eventbrite.
  • Manchester AI Collective. Regular meetups and beginner-friendly sessions across the city, listed on Meetup.
  • GM Business Growth Hub events. Daytime AI workshops aimed at business owners rather than developers.

For larger AI conferences in Manchester, the dates change every year. Event listing sites and the Growth Hub's events page are the most reliable places to check what's coming up.

Telling Manchester's AI companies apart

"AI company" covers very different businesses. Before you talk to one, work out which kind it is:

  • Product companies sell their own AI software. Useful if their product fits your problem exactly. They won't tell you if something else would suit you better.
  • AI agencies build to a brief: chatbots, automations, integrations. They're a good fit when you already know what you want built.
  • AI consultancies work out where AI would help before anything gets built. Some stop at a report; others build what they recommend.
  • Trainers teach your team to use tools like ChatGPT or Copilot. Good for confidence, but training alone rarely changes how work flows.

We've written about the trade-offs in AI consultant vs AI agency vs doing it yourself, and the questions to ask any firm in how to choose an AI consultant.

Where to start

  1. Find the task that costs the most time. Not the most interesting one. The one that eats the most hours each week.
  2. Check you're ready. AI needs reasonably tidy data, sensible access controls and someone accountable for it. Our free AI readiness scorecard takes 4 minutes.
  3. Use the free support. A Growth Hub workshop or a meetup will tell you a lot about what's realistic.
  4. Bring in a specialist for the build. Once you know the problem, get it scoped, quoted and measured properly.

Frequently asked

Is there free AI support for businesses in Manchester?

Yes. The GM Business Growth Hub offers free, publicly funded support to businesses trading in Greater Manchester, including AI advisers and workshops. The Chamber of Commerce and the universities also run free or funded programmes, though these open and close through the year.

How many AI companies are there in Manchester?

A study for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, published in October 2026, counted 663 businesses developing or using AI across Greater Manchester. That includes firms whose main product is AI and firms using it in other industries.

Are there AI grants for Greater Manchester SMEs?

Sometimes. National competitions from Innovate UK and others are open to SMEs anywhere in the UK, and the Growth Hub publishes a regular roundup of what's currently open. Deadlines are usually short, so check often.

Do I need a Manchester AI consultant, or will a remote one do?

Remote works for plenty of AI projects. Being local helps when the work depends on watching how your team actually works, which is where most of the time savings are found. Either way, judge them on what they've delivered, not their postcode.
